Gavin Jarvis (Don Basilio)

By day, GAVIN JARVIS teaches pharmacology to medical students at the University of Sunderland, but after sunset he prefers to sing. He has performed in many G&S operettas as Nanki-Poo (Mikado), Richard Dauntless (Ruddigore), Frederic (Pirates of Penzance), Tolloler (Iolanthe), Ralph Rackstraw (HMS Pinafore), Dummkopf (The Grand Duke), Hilarion & Cyril (Princess Ida), Marco & Luiz (Gondoliers), Grosvenor & the Duke (Patience), Fairfax & Leonard Meryll (Yeoman of the Guard), Fitzbattleaxe (Utopia Ltd), Alexis (The Sorcerer) and The Defendant (Trial by Jury). He has also sung in non G&S productions as Pirelli (Sweeney Todd), Lt Joe Cable (South Pacific), Freddy (My Fair Lady), Bruce Ismay (Titanic), Eisenstein (Die Fledermaus), Malcolm (Macbeth), Gaston (La Traviata), Monostatos (The Magic Flute) and Pylades (Iphigenia in Tauris), and in the chorus for Opera Holland Park and Opera de Baugé. He has recently won the French and German song prizes at the Ryton Music Festival. The last time he sang in Darlington was as the tenor soloist in Stainer’s The Crucifixion in 2024, and he is delighted to be returning now to help Figaro with his nuptials!
