see Events page for 2011 Concert Series
Opera Nova based in the Tees Valley in the North East of England performs concerts at a variety of venues throughout the year and periodically mounts fully staged, costumed opera productions.
In 2011 we will again present a series of semi-staged performances this time comprising the second Acts from La Boheme (Puccini), Carmen (Bizet) and Eugene Onegin (Tchaikovsky).
Our 2010 concert series "Love, Sex and Death" included semi-staged performances from Verdi's Macbeth, Bizet's Carmen and Purcell's Dido and Aeneas.
The society was originally founded by John Morton and Iris Lemare in the mid 1960s. In its first years the Company produced a number of 20th century operatic works initially at Middlesbrough Theatre.
Over time the repertoire has expanded and changed. Previous concert series themes have included "Opera Nova Goes To The Movies" featuring music familiar from film and tv, "On Reflection" and "All Aboard The Orient Express" a musical journey across Europe.
Our most recent full production was Die Fledermaus performed at Middlesbrough Theatre. The 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth was celebrated in 2006 with a series of concerts and a production of Mozart's opera the Magic Flute.
